Upon arrival at Shaw, if you have not been assigned government family or bachelor housing, report to the housing flight at 369 Rhodes Ave., or call (803) 668-3267, before you enter into any agreement for off-base Housing.  The hours of operation of the housing flight are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

On-Base Housing: Shaw has approximately 1,700 on-base housing units, ranging in size from two to four bedrooms.  The waiting period depends on grade and size of the unit.  Average waiting period usually runs from three to six months for NCO's and officers, and can be as long as eight to twelve months for a two-bedroom unit for E-1's through E-6's.  It is important that you submit an advance application from your former duty station to shorten the waiting period.
Common household pets are permitted in base housing, but must have all required shots and be registered with the base Veterinary Clinic.

Off-Base Housing: Most rental property in the Sumter area is in the mobile home category, with rent ranging form $200.00 to $375.00.   Furnished Mobile Homes can be rented on a monthly basis for those families awaiting on-base housing, as well as those wishing to make them their permanent quarters.   Apartments in the area are limited, with rent averaging $350.00 to $500.00 for a two-bedroom unit.  Single family dwellings are also limited in number, with prices averaging $450.00 to $750.00.  Of course, there is a sufficient amount of single-unit homes for sale in the area.

Dormitories:  Available to all single and unaccompanied enlisted personnel, the dorms are conveniently located near dining facilities, Post Office and recreational facilities.  They are completely furnished, and are designed to accommodate two people.  Each dormitory is equipped with laundry facilities for dorm resident convenience.
