Named for Revolutionary War hero Gen. Thomas Sumter, Sumter is the home of Shaw Air Force Base. With a population of 42,000, it is famous for it's gardens, picturesque neighborhoods, and southern hospitality. Settled in the early 1700's, Sumter today is an industrial and manufacturing center in South Carolina, with a variety of businesses, from frozen foods, tools paints and chemicals to furniture, heavy equipment, and high-tech electronics.
